Web Wanderings #7
Rediscover the joy of online exploration! Web Wandering shares a hand-picked selection of unique and captivating websites you won't find anywhere else.
Helloooo again! After some cosmetic updates to Cloudhiker, I decided it’s time again to share some more websites that I think are worth sharing in this very special format. Let’s jump right in, no need to wait!
This edition is also available on Cloudhiker as a Collection so you can find, like and collect the sites there: Web Wanderings #7
Genetic Cars
https://rednuht.org/genetic_cars_2
I know some people don’t believe in evolution theory. A bummer, but actually this website is all about evolution. Not quite about humans, or nature itself, but this one tries to build different “cars“ which then must follow a rocky street. Whoever reaches the longest distance is then modified a bit and must try again in the next round. Evolution right in your browser!
#ShowYourStripes
Another topic some people denying it exists, but statistics are not lying about global warming. The Reading University built this little tool to create your very own “warming stripes“, for your own location.
Old Internet Files
https://rscott.org/OldInternetFiles
Everyone knows the internet, but very few people actually know the roots. And while your would need a supercomputer to store informations about all the websites currently available, the websites of the 1990s era fit into a few text files. And you can download them here.
Box Office Mojo
Did you know that the revenue of movies isn’t that of a secret at all? Like when media reports that the newest Avatar made a billion in sales in the first weeks? That info is available, here on Box Office Mojo.
Did you know that to this day, a Chinese movie was the most successful one world-wide? Ne Zha II made almost 2 billion, and I never heard of it before! 😳
Adnauseam
Everyone hates advertisement on the web. And I’m always baffled when I have to turn off my ad blocker or need to use the web browser of my mom. That being said, one can use ad blockers. Or turn the world upside down and click every single ad. Yeah you read that right. Adnauseam is a browser extension which clicks every ad, rendering it useless for both the ad networks and advertiser.
Do you like all those websites and want to explore more? Cloudhiker has 26,000+ sites all waiting for you to be discovered! All for free, no account needed.
Goomics
That’s a fun one. It’s actually a mocking comic series which explains what’s going on inside Google.
I think I said it once before, but I hate Google. Was a fanboy in the 2000s and very early 2010s, and I loved my Pixel phones. But the company just did every possible thing to piss me off in all those years.
JWZ
Jamie Zawinski. You know him? no? Me neither. But he has a cool Matrix-like website.
Wifi Card
Smartphone vendors made sharing wifi passwords quite easy, yet every time someone visits somebody else’s home, they ask for the Wifi password and then the owner goes fumbling a small paper out of a box. 🙄
Jesus, people. It can be so easy. Use this website to print a QR Code for your Wifi and just point to if when someone asks.
XR Dinosaurs
Go grab the small kid next to you (or if you’re a Millenial, laugh and grab yourself) and have a look. 3D dinos! In your browser! Awesome! 🤩
Soundtrack Map
https://flavourmachine.com/soundtrackmap/app/
I always like visualizations of things that usually don’t get put into pictures. Like this, where the soundtrack of movies and TV shows are put into a large map, showing artist and genre connections. Maybe you’ll even find a cool new thing to watch, based on your loved soundtracks?!
Thanks for hanging out with me for Edition #7 of Web Wanderings by Cloudhiker! Got thoughts on this format? I’d love to hear them. Share it with anyone who loves a good internet rabbit hole, and hit subscribe so you don’t miss the next adventure—it’ll pop up in your inbox in a week or two!
Until then, why not hop on Cloudhiker and see what weird and wonderful corners of the web you can stumble into? 👀
