Web Wanderings #5
Rediscover the joy of online exploration! Web Wandering shares a hand-picked selection of unique and captivating websites you won't find anywhere else.
Man, it’s hot outside. I am just some of those people who can’t stand the heat. 33°C (~91°F) is like 10° too much. I am melting away, letting the mobile AC unit run most of the day. Unfortunately, and that’s something I learned from traveling around and through social media, Germany seems to be one of the few countries where people seem to refuse to install AC everywhere. One even rarely finds AC in restaurants or other public places.
Well, anyway. It’s hot, but there’s little I can do about that. I hope that you, beloved reader, stay safe and cooled. Go grab a glass of water before you dive into a few more awesome websites from the magnificent curated collection of Cloudhiker. ✨
This edition is also available on Cloudhiker as a Collection so you can find, like and collect the sites there: Web Wanderings #5
The Holotypic Occlupanid Research Group
Have you ever heard of occlupanids? No? Me neither. Actually, this website is an incredible piece of art, if you can say that. Somebody sat down on his breakfast table, unwrapping his bread and wonders what this weird little plastic thingy is that is used to seal bread bags, mostly with the fresh before date on it. This person went on and thought of a “species“ name for those plastic clips, and later even categorization based on form and function.
Kleroteria
Kleroteria is an email lottery. Periodically, a subscriber - who may remain anonymous - is randomly chosen to write to all the other subscribers. I haven’t wrote a post yet, but I think this concept is worth sharing.
Artvee
Every year, thousands of pieces of art enter the public domain. This means, that the original copyright holder is dead for quite a time already and nobody inherited right. Those pieces are basically “free for all“. Artvee collects a lot of art in the public domain and makes them accessible for regular people by offering photos, ready to download. There’s so much cool antique stuff there! Just browse a little and have a look what was created like 500 years ago.
v86
Ohhhh this is one I really love! It’s an emulator for very old operating systems. Emulators create virtual environments so that the old software thinks it’s running on a 40 year old computer. Go play around a bit, everything is ready to use and dive into. You can lurk around in an antique Unix, or play the very first Solitare in Windows 3 (yeah, 3 like 3.0, not 10 or 11). 🤩
Feels

I had to laugh a little when I first opened that cute little game. It’s basically “Where’s Waldo“, but with Emojis.
Do you like all those websites and want to explore more? Cloudhiker has 26,000+ sites all waiting for you to be discovered! All for free, no account needed.
Linerider
Like every Millenial I know has used Line Rider at last once. For those who don’t know it: you draw lines and a cute little guy on a sledge rides along on those lines based on physics simulations. What started as a cute little game evolved into a huge community with people creating mindblowing art. From lovely sceneries and crazy roller coasters, to music videos (even for classics) and even feature films.
The website allows you to create new tracks, even though the original share links from the past are no longer working.
Amazeworld
Yeah, haha, funny… a-maze-world. This website has a few mazes (what’s the plural of maze?!) ready to play. The design, look and feel alone screams 90’s website. I love it.
Fishing the Feed
https://www.fishingthefeed.com
I am not a particular fan of fish. But if it’s fresh and cooked well, I like to eat it. However, industrial fishing is tearing apart our oceans. It’s heartbreaking to see marine life wiped out by overfishing, bycatch, and destructive practices like bottom trawling. Okay, so let’s just raise and harvest fishes in farms. Not so fast, buddy. This website is an in-depth guide to farmed fish and its negative sides.
Will you press the Button?

Fun little game where you get one cool thing, but also a negative one, if you press the button. Will you press?

Last but not least, a small web experiment which was first published back in 1997(!) and is still available. Sit back, relax, and let the dots spin around in the circle.
