Web Wanderings #4
Rediscover the joy of online exploration! Web Wandering shares a hand-picked selection of unique and captivating websites you won't find anywhere else.
I just came back from vacation to find myself overwhelmed with all the stuff I had to go through. And I’m not even close to have all sorted out.
But I take this time to get you some featured websites, hand-picked from the huge curated collection maintained on Cloudhiker.
This edition is also available on Cloudhiker as a Collection so you can find, like and collect the sites there: Web Wanderings #4
Keygen Jukebox
Let’s be honest. Everybody downloaded songs from Limewire in the late 90s and early 2000s. And that’s okay, kind of. Don’t want to get into discussions about music piracy yet, but the culture that evolved from the mere idea of sharing stuff online is incredible. One thing I vividly remember is the music that keygens came with. Funky tunes played while you created a new activation key for Photoshop CS3. But, listen to yourself on Keygen Jukebox. 🔊
The Death Generator
We stay in the past, but have a look at video games. Everybody knows the famous “YOU DIED“ screen from Dark Souls. But there are games with waaaaay better death-screens. And The Death Generator let’s you create your very own screen, ready to save and share with your friends. What a great alternative to all these memes…
Not always right
Have you ever worked in commerce? Or any other business where you have a lot of contact with your customers? If you don’t, keep it that way and stay out of trouble. While some people are nice, I remember wild discussions (and even hard insults) when I was working at a shop selling and repairing Apple products. This site brings flash backs to that time with horrible stories about customer interactions.
Phil’s Antique Radios
When I think about the Internet, personal websites and blogs will always be a big part of it. And man, some people are so dedicated about their hobbies that they create websites about tiny niche topics, like Phil did. This website has basically EVERYTHING you need to know about old radios. Not only is there an outstanding gallery of radios from all over the world, Phil did a lot of research and wrote a text about each and every piece. Much love to you Phil!
Do you like all those websites and want to explore more? Cloudhiker has 26,000+ sites all waiting for you to be discovered! All for free, no account needed.
The Nicest Place on the Internet
People can be nice. And this website has a special place in my heart. While some say “yeah it’s just a bunch of videos of people pretending to give you a hug“… damn, can you imagine how many people on this planet would love to just get a hug right now?! It’s a wonderful project and I’m happy that it’s online after all this time.
By the way, this is actually a reboot of a similar site which was taken offline a long time ago and is now parked and full of ads.
Open Trees
There are maps for a lot of things on the Internet. For cyber threats, a map of shadows in NY City or one showing recent earthquakes. OpenTrees just displays trees. Sounds lame, but that one is really interesting! If you’re in one of the mapped cities, zoom in and find out more about the trees around you. They even did this for whole parks!
Livermore’s Centennial Light Bulb
https://www.centennialbulb.org
You may have heard about this already, if not prepare for some amazement: this website is dedicated to the worlds longest-burning light bulb! What’s so special about a long-burning bulb, you may ask. Well, it’s burning for 124 years now. One hundred twenty four years! 😳
I guess tech was just built different in the 1900s. Oh, and they even have a live-stream for the bulb.
Johnny Cash has been everywhere
https://www.johnnycashhasbeeneverywhere.com
Let us end with something funny. Johnny Cash wrote a song with a similar title. And this interactive map, the song plays and every town mention appears. Seems Johnny has really been everywhere. 😂
