Web Wanderings #18
Rediscover the joy of online exploration! Web Wandering shares a hand-picked selection of the most awesome websites you won't find anywhere else.
I thought that this could be the big celebration issue. Cloudhiker reached 30000 websites two weeks ago. 🥳
In the meantime, I just had a lot of stuff to do and had some open tasks for improving the website checks. In the past months, the checks became increasingly unreliable so I decided to have another look at it.
So, finally, today I got some spare time for putting together a wonderful new episode for Web Wanderings! 💪 Have fun and enjoy the selected sites.
This edition is also available on Cloudhiker as a Collection so you can find, like and collect the sites of this Edition: Web Wanderings #18
Pentagon Pizza Index
Correlation does not always mean causation. There are some wonderful examples out there, even websites dedicated to showing funny correlations that, of course, have nothing to do with each other. So, one might think that tracking pizza orders in Washington has nothing to do with global politics. Turns out, if you narrow down to the Pentagon, pizza orders actually go up shortly before or with important global events. 🤯🍕
Dreamcomposer
I adore small web projects like this, where people can share their ideas, thoughts, what they are worried about, how they feel. Without hate, racism or spam. Just random people writing some lovely (or sad) text to get this off their chest. BTW did you know that writing thoughts down, especially when you are anxious, worried or live trough a lot of stress, actually can calm your mind? Problems are likely not gone, but just the psychology of writing it somewhere and put that note aside can have a positive impact.
Airline Meals
The first and only time I actually hat a mean on a Finnair flight was on my trip to Tokyo last year. And it was actually delightful. It’s not a 5-star restaurant experience in economy class, but I was positively surprised by the quality of the meal.
And, well, people do people things, especially if they have too much spare time. So someone created a website where people could post pictures of their airplane meals. It’s an impressive collection, featuring over 50 thousand pictures. So if you want to know what your next flight provision looks like: have a look here.
Sloop Web Directory
Let’s have a short dive into the internet. I like sharing and promoting projects that follow the same idea as Cloudhiker; exploring and discovering the cool sides of the internet. And I found Sloop actually nice. It’s not huge, but well curated.
Fictional Brands Archive
https://fictionalbrandsarchive.com
Close your eyes and try to think of as many brands or companies that you saw in TV series, movies, video games or literature. E-Corp from Mr Robot? Nuka Cola from Fallout? How about Pizza Planet from Toy Story?
There are so many cool brands which were created just for some other fictional work, yet they are sometimes more present than real companies. I love this collection showing many brands.
Do you like all those websites and want to explore more? Cloudhiker has 30,000+ sites all waiting for you to be discovered! Totally free, no account needed.
Wandering Stones
Europe was once covered with a lot of ice in the last glacial period. And during that time, glaciers covering large parts consisted not only of pure water, but took things with them while they formed, moved and finally melted. And so it comes, that a huge 350t (~771,600 lb) boulder originating from Bornhol, Sweden, is now located in Kobbeln, Germany, about… checks notes… 650km (~400 miles) away. 😳
Path to Philosophy
A fun web experience: open any random Wikipedia article, click on the first link you encounter, and repeat until you reach the Philosophy page. How many steps can you reach?
The Rift
Welcome back to the year 2001. Your dad just bought the first family PC and connected it to the internet. You got some weird string of text from a friend and he told you to put that into the “Internet Explorer“. You do that, trusting your friend, and you’re overwhelmed. You’re amazed by what appears on the screen. It’s Juette’s website. Whoever Juette is, she did a stunning job putting together a fancy, personal and joyful website. 🩵
(I have left out a screenshot to not spoil the experience)
The Restroom Archive
Prepare for an… interesting… experience. Probably nobody needs this. Yet it exists. Maybe somebody has too much time on their hands, I don’t know. But it’s kinda beautiful.
Internet Road Trip
https://neal.fun/internet-roadtrip
I am a little late to the show with this one. Neal, who was featured in a past episode, did another super cool thing: Google Streetmap, but the direction is democratically chosen by internet strangers. The car’s on the road for over 35000 miles already. And when it first popped up, the car did some pretty funny circles. It’s currently in Montauk, US. Let’s see where it is in a week.
