Web Wanderings #10
Rediscover the joy of online exploration! Web Wandering shares a hand-picked selection of the most awesome websites you won't find anywhere else.
I unintentionally skipped a week in which I wanted to publish this very edition of Web Wanderings. I was sick for over a week, caught Corona and had to safeguard my bed for that time. Now, even though I’m not feeling 100% fit again, I am able to do stuff. Just in time for my vacation, which is starting today. I’ll be away for a week - again, haha.
So, today is the day of Web Wanderings #10. I started this series a couple of weeks ago to share the very best of Cloudhiker. And now we are here, Edition 10. And I want to say thank you to all the readers, for sharing the newsletter with others and subscribing to future updates. 🙏
This edition is also available on Cloudhiker as a Collection so you can find, like and collect the sites there: Web Wanderings #9
Day of the Dead
I can remember when I watched Coco (2017) for the first time, a Disney movie about this very special day in the Mexican culture. The Day of the Dead is a holiday to remember loved ones by sharing a meal with them as one would when they were alive. The website is beautifully designed and informs the visitor about the celebration, the why and how. Coincidentially, the Dia de los Muertos is happening in 35 days, November 1st and 2nd.
Sleeping in Airports
https://www.sleepinginairports.net
Traveling via airplane has evolved a gigantic economy around planes, airports and the very act of traveling in a plane. Have you ever been on an intercontinental flight, lasting 10+ hours? It’s horrible, it’s hard to sleep in a plane. Yet, you might be even forced to sleep at the airport, when your plane is late, you caught a bad schedule or a flight was cancelled. On sleepinginairports.net you will find information on where and how to get a good night of sleep at your favorite airport.
Jeff Varasano’s Famous New York Pizza Recipe
https://www.varasanos.com/pizzarecipe.htm
My personal catch phrase is “I turn Pizza into Code and Photos“. And scrolling through this site made me instantly want to get a delicious pizza! Jeff, owner of Varasano’s is sharing his pizza recipe with every little detail and a lot of photos to follow through. And not only that, he even has a personal list of the best pizzerias he knows. His personal favorite, Johnny’s Pizzeria in Mount Vernon, NY is actually still open. So, who’s gonna get me some pizza from there???? 🍕
Marvel Character or Font?
https://marvel-or-font.web.app
That is one of those awesome web experiences I love to play with, share with others, and I deeply endorse the creators! So, when you hear Footlight, is that a Marvel character, or a typing font?
Supertunnel Simulator
Another great web app to play with. Given any point on earth - probably your home town or whatever - where would you land if you would dig a tunnel right through the middle of our beloved earth?
For me, when I would dig just a little to the side, I’ll pop out in some Hobbit hole in New Zealand.
Do you like all those websites and want to explore more? Cloudhiker has 27,000+ sites all waiting for you to be discovered! All for free, no account needed.
This vs. That
This is for all my fellow web developers out there. Do you actually know the difference between border-box and content-box in CSS? Or the difference between a button or an input with the type button? Find out more here.
UX Bullshit
People working in tech know the game: as soon as your product manager enters the room and yells, that his UX consultant told him that we should try a omni-channel eyetracking with a stakeholder to reduce system leverage, it’s going to be an annoying week. Who’s gonna tell him, that this is probably bullshit?!
DVD Screensaver
Some of the older peeps will remember the DVD screensaver. It’s basically the logo floating around on the screen, bouncing off the edges and changing color when it does. You can sit there for hours, waiting patiently until it hits the corner just right…
Care Cards
Care Cards is a simple, friendly website that gives quick tips to boost your mood and support mental well-being. It’s easy to use, nicely designed, and offers lots of small, positive ideas you can try right away. The site feels welcoming and encourages users to share suggestions, making it grow with the community.
Field Guide to American Traffic Signs
https://www.andrewturnbull.net/signs.html
I am not from the US (and sadly never been there), but I know the struggles of traffic signs. There are some very obvious ones like the Stop sign, that every body knows, and everybody knows what it means - even though not really everybody takes that for real.
Anyway, there are some sings, that nobody knows and few have ever seen. This field guide helps you recognize your beloved sign and find out what it’s about. Great collection!
That’s a wrap for today’s edition of Web Wanderings!
